You don't need a hard-to-get permit to experience the magic of Northern Arizona. While spots like "The Wave" get the spotlight, the permit process can be frustrating and highly competitive. The best-kept secret of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is that you don’t need a permit to see some of the most spectacular, otherworldly landscapes on earth.

When you make Lee’s Ferry Lodge your desert hideaway, you are perfectly positioned to explore these hidden gems. Here is your ultimate guide to exploring the red rocks without the red tape.

Just a drive away from the lodge, the greater Vermilion Cliffs area holds staggering desert wonders that are free to explore.

1. White Pocket: The "Permit-Free" Alternative to The Wave

Often compared to The Wave, White Pocket features mind-bending, swirling sandstone and "brain rock" formations. It requires a 4x4 vehicle to reach, but the payoff is a sprawling, colorful stone playground that you can explore without the crowds or the lottery.

2. Buckskin Gulch & The Maze

  • Buckskin Gulch: One of the longest and deepest slot canyons in the world, Buckskin Gulch offers miles of towering, undulating rock walls. You can hike in as far as you like and turn back, making it a highly customizable day trip.

  • The Maze: Another fantastic, lesser-known area offering brilliant red rock formations and ancient petroglyphs. It’s a quiet, rugged area perfect for those looking to truly get off the beaten path.

3. Local Favorites in the Lee’s Ferry Lodge Backyard

  • The Spencer Trail: For those who want to get their heart pumping, this steep, historic trail zigzags up the canyon wall. Your reward? Unbeatable, panoramic views of the Colorado River and the surrounding valley.

  • The Honeymoon Trail: Step back in time on this historic pioneer wagon route. It offers a relatively easy hike with fantastic views of the cliffs and a tangible connection to the rugged history of the Southwest.

4. The Grand Canyon’s North Rim

Sweeping panoramic view of the Grand Canyon North Rim; while the South Rim is famous, the North Rim is closer to Lee’s Ferry Lodge for a day trip and offers a much cooler, alpine environment during the summer months.

One of the most unforgettable ways to experience this area is from the water. Many of our guests head straight to the river for a breathtaking paddle through Glen Canyon.

We highly recommend booking a backhaul service with Kayak the Colorado. A powerboat will ferry you and your kayak upriver into the heart of the magnificent Glen Canyon. From there, you can paddle at your own pace back down to your vehicle, drifting past towering sandstone walls, hidden beaches, and ancient petroglyphs.

Prefer casting a line? Lee’s Ferry is globally renowned for its world-class fly fishing. The clear, cold waters released from Glen Canyon Dam create an ideal habitat for rainbow trout, making it a bucket-list destination for anglers.

Hike Through History and Geology

For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, hiking around Vermilion Cliffs offers something for every skill level.

  • Step Back in Time: Explore the Lonely Dell Ranch, a historic pioneer settlement right at Lee's Ferry, or hike the rugged Spencer Trail for panoramic views of the river.

  • Geological Wonders: The Cathedral Wash hike is a local favorite, offering a fun, slightly technical scramble through a stunning slot canyon down to the Colorado River.

  • Grand Canyon Views: If you want to experience the grandeur of the Grand Canyon without the massive crowds, take a scenic drive to the North Rim trail hikes and overlooks, or stop by the Badger Canyon view point for spectacular vistas.

Keep your eyes peeled—this bridge is a favorite hangout spot for the rare and majestic California Condors, the largest land bird in North America!

While we pride ourselves on our remote tranquility, Lee's Ferry Lodge is also incredibly convenient for day trips to famous landmarks. We are just a short, scenic drive from Page, AZ, where you can explore the famous sweeping curves of Horseshoe Bend and the mesmerizing light beams of Antelope Canyon.
